About Mountain View

Mountain View is an Ozark city in northeastern Howell County, with 2,533 people at the 2020 census. It sits on US 60 between Willow Springs and Birch Tree, a highway corridor that ties the town to the larger service map of south-central Missouri. The townsite was laid out in 1888, while the Mountain View post office dates to 1879. A railroad supply line reached the city in the winter of 1885, helping turn the elevated site into a place where farm, timber, and household needs could be handled close to home.

School and college life give the city a second center of gravity. Mountain View-Birch Tree R-III operates Mountain View Elementary, Liberty Middle, and Liberty Senior High, and Southwest Baptist University runs a Mountain View campus on South Oak Street with programs in business, health sciences, criminal justice, education, psychology, and sociology. City Hall, utilities, public works, the fire service, and the local library fill in the civic map. The high ground and the road names do most of the orientation work here: Mountain View is a small Ozark town that grew around a post office, rail connection, and the view that gave it its name.
