Mud Lake, ID

Mud Lake is a city in Jefferson County, Idaho, in the Idaho Falls metropolitan area and the broad agricultural country of eastern Idaho. The name comes from the nearby lake and wetland system, whose water levels shift with seasons and irrigation. Ranches and hay fields took root around Camas, Beaver, and Medicine Lodge creeks, and the Mud Lake Wildlife Management Area now protects part of that basin for birds and other wildlife.

Latter-day Saint settlers organized a branch here in 1919, giving the city a longstanding religious and settlement thread. Mud Lake also made national news in 1981 when jackrabbits multiplied across the farm country and local farmers organized roundups to protect crops. That odd episode is part of the local lore because it captures the place's landscape: open fields, dry basins, and wildlife that can suddenly become impossible to ignore. Mud Lake sits within Idaho Falls's wider orbit, but its character comes from the lake, the creeks, the farms, and the practical community life built around them.
