About Munising

Munising is Alger County's seat on the south shore of Lake Superior, across Munising Bay from Grand Island and at the western gateway to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The name comes from the Ojibwe word minisiing, "at the island," a direct nod to the geography. Ojibwe and Noquet people used the area long before the city's lumber era, which began to grow in the 1870s. The city dock now sends cruises toward Pictured Rocks and Grand Island. Munising is an Upper Peninsula town where the name, the bay, and the park all point the same way.
