Murchison, TX

Murchison is a Henderson County city on State Highway 31, about eight miles northeast of Athens and roughly halfway between the county-seat orbit and the East Texas roads toward Tyler. The highway runs through the center, with Farm Roads 1616 and 773 meeting nearby. The landscape shifts between farms, pasture, and piney East Texas country, and Lake Palestine and Cedar Creek Reservoir are within the broader regional recreation circle. Murchison Independent School District serves the town, while Athens handles many of the larger county trips.

The town began with a different name. The area was known as Lindsey until the late nineteenth century, when the railway reached it and the station was named Murchison for T. F. Murchison, an Athens-area Confederate recruiting officer and landowner. By 1884, the community had a post office, cotton gin, school, church, stores, and Farmers' Alliance, with cotton, corn, fruit, and truck crops moving through the local economy. The Murchison X-Ray and later Murchison Star gave the town a newspaper voice, and water from the nearby lakes helped shift the area's profile toward boating and fishing. Murchison remains a small highway city with county history in its name and rail-era bones beneath the modern roads.
