Murdo, SD

Murdo sits at the junction of Interstate 90 and U.S. 83, serving as the quiet hub of Jones County right in the middle of South Dakota. Roughly halfway between Mitchell and Rapid City, it has long been a natural stopping point across the prairie. The town got its start in the early 1900s as a railroad stop on the Milwaukee Road, named after Scottish cattle baron Murdo MacKenzie. Today, that traveler-friendly heritage comes to life at the Pioneer Auto Show, one of the most popular attractions in the region. Spanning several buildings, the museum showcases hundreds of classic cars, vintage motorcycles, antique tractors, and nostalgic collectibles that give Murdo a distinct personality you rarely find in a town this size.
