Murdo, SD

Murdo is the Jones County seat at the meeting of I-90 and U.S. 83, a central South Dakota crossroads where prairie travel and county business share the same few blocks. The town’s everyday map includes county government, highway-facing businesses, the Covered Wagon Cafe, and the park and dam spaces that give people places to stop. Eastbound and westbound traffic supplies a steady backdrop, while the county-seat role keeps Murdo tied to the surrounding county. Murdo is roughly halfway between Rapid City and Mitchell, a detail that made the railroad stop useful and still shapes its highway role. The town carries that in-between position without losing its county-seat identity.

Railroad history sits underneath that highway role. The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad founded Murdo around 1907, and the town grew around a roundhouse, railyard, and passenger station serving trains between Rapid City and Mitchell. The name honors cattle baron Murdo MacKenzie. Pioneer Auto Show, started by A.J. “Dick” Geisler and his family in 1954, keeps the travel story visible with more than 250 cars, motorcycles, tractors, music boxes, toys, rocks, gems, and fossils. For a county seat at a major road junction, that collection makes the old movement through Murdo visible in a very physical way.

Murdo’s water spaces add another side to the town. City Park has a walking path around its water feature and covered picnic areas; North Dam, about five miles north, has a picnic area, an all-weather dock, and fishing. The setup gives people a place for an hour outdoors and gives travelers a reason to look beyond the interstate. Murdo’s local work is spread across government, town businesses, park upkeep, and the visitor traffic that comes through for cars, food, and the open prairie. The result is a town with a railroad past, a highway present, and a museum culture that remains visible from the road.
