Murphy, NC

Murphy is Cherokee County's seat in far-western North Carolina, with 1,608 residents in the 2020 census. The town sits where the Hiwassee and Valley Rivers meet and is the westernmost county seat in the state, a fact that makes it the service center for a wide mountain county. The Cherokee name for the site, Tlanusi-yi, refers to a legend about a giant leech in the Hiwassee. Downtown holds the Cherokee County Historical Museum in a former Carnegie Library, along with the L&N Depot, local shops, and restaurants. The roughly four-mile Murphy River Walk follows both rivers around the center, and Konehete Veterans Park connects to that water-edge route. Tri-County Community College serves the region, while Cherokee County schools and nearby Harrah's Cherokee Valley River add to the local employment map.
