About Murphy

Maxwell Creek links Murphy's earliest settlement story to its present-day park system. Comfort and Lydia McMillen arrived with their children in 1846 and settled beside a branch of Muddy Creek that became known as Maxwell Creek. The farming community was called Old Decatur and then Maxwell's Branch before taking the name Murphy in 1888, when William Murphy donated land for the St. Louis Southwestern Railway and its depot. From that small rail-shipping point, Murphy grew especially quickly around the turn of the twenty-first century: population rose from 3,099 in 2000 to 21,013 in the 2020 census. The July 2025 estimate was 20,985, essentially level with the 2020 base, within 5.69 square miles between Plano and Wylie. The creek's floodplain now carries a 42-acre greenbelt of concrete, dirt, and granite-surface trails.

Water's Edge Park sits in the middle of the system with soccer fields, a playground, shaded picnic space, and trail segments running north and south, while a footbridge reaches the more natural Preserve trailhead. Nearby Murphy Central Park combines a stocked pond, splash pad, multipurpose fields, playground, outdoor learning area, amphitheater, and a 0.6-mile connection to the larger trail network. Indoor recreation is concentrated at the Murphy Community and Activity centers, where renovated spaces include a game room and fitness room alongside classes and open-gym hours. Much of the city's event calendar uses those shared facilities: the 2026 schedule placed the Sounds at Sundown concert series at Central Park and also included Backyard BBQ, Maize Days, a community campout, and Christmas in the Park.
