Neapolis, OH

Neapolis is a small Lucas County community in northwestern Providence Township, laid out in 1872 and named for the ancient Greek city. The same year, the Wabash, St. Louis and Pacific Railway ran through town, giving the new plat a rail connection and a reason to grow. That line is gone now, but its corridor survives as a bike trail. Neapolis still has the practical marker of a post office, with ZIP 43547, and the surrounding township remains a patchwork of farm roads and old settlement lines.

Providence Township's earlier story begins with Ottawa people and the Maumee River canal system, whose locks, stores, hotels, and warehouses once pulled traffic through the area. Fires, cholera, and the rise of railroads shifted that activity away from the river, leaving Neapolis as a smaller inland community. Today the township fire and rescue station sits on Main Street, and nearby Toledo, Waterville, and Grand Rapids cover larger errands.
