Nellis AFB, NV

Nellis AFB is a census-designated place in the Las Vegas Valley, about eight miles northeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. Its modern identity grew from a much older airfield: the site began as a private Las Vegas airstrip in 1929, became Las Vegas Army Air Field in 1941, and hosted the Army Air Corps Flexible Gunnery School during World War II. After the war it closed, reopened as Las Vegas Air Force Base in 1949, and was renamed Nellis the next year for Lt. William Harrell Nellis, a Southern Nevada pilot killed in the Battle of the Bulge.

The base’s desert setting is part of the story. Open range and controlled airspace made room for gunnery, weapons, and flight training, and Nellis later became home to advanced weapons instruction, Red Flag exercises, the Thunderbirds, and the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center. The CDP label covers a place whose daily life is organized around runways, housing, training ranges, and the larger Las Vegas military network. The local scoop is that Nellis is not simply a suburb with an Air Force name: it is a working aviation community whose map is inseparable from the desert training space around it.
