About New Berlin

New Berlin is a Guadalupe County town founded in 1868 by German immigrants east of Cibolo Creek. The name points straight back to Berlin, Germany, and Carl August Edward ‘Ed’ Tewes is remembered as the town’s founding father. Tewes built the first store, and a post office operated here from 1878 to 1906. By the 1880s, New Berlin had mills, cotton gins, and a shipping trade in cotton, corn, and oats. It is a small German-Texas place whose first chapter still reads like a family ledger and a post-office-era storefront.
