New Cassel, NY

New Cassel is a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of North Hempstead on Long Island. It was one of the first free African American communities on Long Island, giving the area a history that stands out from many Nassau County suburbs. New Cassel has also become home to Haitian and other immigrant families, adding to its working- and middle-class residential character. The Town of North Hempstead operates parks and recreation facilities in the community, and daily life is closely tied to Westbury, Carle Place, and central Nassau County.
