About New Castle

New Castle is a town in Garfield County, Colorado, situated on the north side of the Colorado River near the Grand Hogback. Incorporated in 1888, the historic coal mining community of approximately 4,880 was the site of the Vulcan Mine disaster in 1896, which ignited an underground coal fire that burned for over a century. Public education is administered by the Garfield County School District Re-2.
