New Castle Northwest, PA

New Castle Northwest is a Lawrence County census-designated place on the northwestern side of New Castle, the county seat. It occupies the southern part of Neshannock Township, with the Shenango River along its southwestern edge. That river boundary is the useful orientation: the city is immediately to the south and east, while Neshannock's township roads and residential streets run northward through the township. Neshannock means "Place of Two Rivers," a fitting name for this creek-and-river country.

Neshannock started as a farming landscape, then coal, clay, and railroads changed the map. Clay attracted potters, coal mining began by 1845, and rail lines followed both the Shenango River and Neshannock Creek in the nineteenth century. Those lines connected the area south toward Lake Erie and the Pennsylvania oil region. New Castle's suburban growth later brought residential development into the township. Today New Castle Northwest is a residential edge of New Castle, with the river and old transport corridors giving the area its shape.
