New Columbia, PA

New Columbia, known locally as Newky, grew on land once called Dogtown along the West Branch Susquehanna River. David Yoder laid out and incorporated the village in 1818 after settling 60 acres and selling lots to other residents. By 1846 it was called New Columbus and held 30 dwellings, stores, and a tavern. Four decades later, the village had about 100 houses, a hotel, store, post office, train station, and boat shop. River access and the road north through Union County gave New Columbia a busy early map.

U.S. Route 15 now carries the main flow of traffic past the community, with the West Branch still close by and Lewisburg and Milton providing larger regional connections. New Columbia sits inside White Deer Township, whose supervisors meet at the township building, and local students attend Milton Area schools. The village marked its bicentennial with events in 2018, bringing the old name, river setting, and surviving street pattern back into focus. New Columbia remains a small Pennsylvania place whose daily life sits between township government, school routes, the highway, and the Susquehanna valley.
