New Germany, MN

New Germany grew in Carver County around the Great Northern Railroad depot in the 1880s, and the German background of many early settlers supplied the name. The city sits along County Roads 30 and 33, with Highway 7 nearby and a regional trail following the former rail corridor. That gives New Germany a distinctive local map: farm fields and small-town streets on one side, a paved route for bikes and walkers on the other. The old post office had an earlier life too, moving into town from another site while keeping the name Purity.

School and daily errands connect New Germany to Waconia, whose public schools serve the area, including Waconia High School. The city’s present-day landscape stays agricultural around the edges, but the trail brings a steady outdoor thread through town and links toward Lake Waconia, Lester Prairie, and the wider Carver County network. It is a place where railroad history, German-settler memory, and modern trail travel overlap, with the old depot logic replaced by bicycles, county roads, and school buses.
