New Hampton, NH

The New Hampton census-designated place is the compact village at the heart of New Hampton, along New Hampshire Route 132 just south of Route 104. The 2020 census counted 373 residents in the CDP; the broader town counted 2,377. It sits in Belknap County near Pemigewasset Lake, with the Pemigewasset River forming the town's western edge and Lake Waukewan and Lake Winona farther northeast. Interstate 93's Exit 23 is close, putting the village within reach of the Lakes Region and the White Mountains.

New Hampton's history starts with a 1765 grant called Moultonborough Addition. When the town incorporated in 1777, its name changed to New Hampton, honoring the New Hampshire birthplace of Jonathan Moulton. The village's old travel role survives in the Daniel Smith Tavern, which served travelers from 1805 into the 1920s. Education is another long-running thread: New Hampton School was established in 1821, while today's public students attend New Hampton Community School before moving into the Newfound Area School District. The CDP is a small center inside a lake-and-river town with a long institutional memory.
