New Haven is a quiet rural community tucked into southern Huron County where Route 224 crosses Routes 61 and 598. Founded in 1815 in Ohio's historic Firelands, it was modeled directly after New Haven, Connecticut, with neat streets centered around a diamond-shaped town green. That open green still anchors the community today, giving the area a friendly, traditional village feel surrounded by open farmland.

In the early nineteenth century, New Haven was a busy trade stop for wagons hauling grain north toward Lake Erie, filled with traveler taverns, general stores, and local craftsmen.
