About New Hope

New Hope wraps around the south side of a U-shaped bend in the Tennessee River, where the river widens into Nickajack Lake below Nickajack Dam. The town began as Antioch and incorporated as New Hope in 1974, choosing a name tied to a local church and cemetery. That history sits close to the water: the municipal line, the lake shore, and the road toward South Pittsburg all meet in a narrow Appalachian valley.

Maple View Public Use Area gives the town one of the region's best river-facing outdoor stops, with picnic grounds and a view toward Nickajack Cave and its wildlife refuge. The cave and reservoir turn the river into more than a boundary; they shape boating, fishing, and the way visitors approach the town. New Hope also sits in the Chattanooga-area orbit and near the Nickajack Port industrial plans, so a small river city has a working side alongside the lake scenery. It is a place where a bend in the Tennessee does most of the introductions.
