New Houlka, MS

New Houlka is a quiet, tight-knit town in Chickasaw County, Mississippi, with roots that stretch back well over two centuries. The original settlement, Old Houlka, started as a Chickasaw trading post near the intersection of early travel routes. When the railroad arrived in 1904, residents picked up their homes and businesses and moved a mile down the road to be along the tracks. That shift created New Houlka, which soon grew into a steady farming hub supported by local shops, churches, and neighborhood schools.

Today, that former rail corridor is part of the Tanglefoot Trail, a popular paved path that brings cyclists, runners, and walkers right through the center of town. The New Houlka Whistle Stop, housed in a restored historic school building near the town square, offers a convenient place to rest and chat with neighbors. Community life centers largely on the Houlka Attendance Center, where local kids go to school from kindergarten through graduation. It is a peaceful, slow-paced corner of northeast Mississippi with deep rural roots and easy access to outdoor recreation.
