About New Market

New Market sits along State Highway 11E in Jefferson County, beside Jefferson City and on the road toward Morristown and Knoxville. The town was incorporated under a 1911 private act and reincorporated in 1977, leaving both dates in its municipal history. City Hall, the volunteer fire department, and the New Market Utility District are all part of the current civic map, with 11E carrying the through traffic that connects the town to larger neighbors across the county.

Railroad history gives New Market its most remembered chapter. On September 24, 1904, two Southern Railway passenger trains collided near town in one of North America's deadliest rail disasters; the line where it happened is still in use. Local businesses serve residents and travelers along the highway, and Jefferson City supplies the adjacent larger center. New Market is a small Jefferson County town whose identity comes from a road, a working railroad, and a history that remains unusually visible in the town's name.
