New Rockford was founded in 1883 as a railroad stop and quickly grew into the central hub of Eddy County. In 1915, local residents were so confident in their thriving community that they launched a serious campaign to move North Dakota's state capital here from Bismarck. The capital stayed put, but that bold, independent spirit helped build a proud community that has held onto its small-town charm ever since.

Today, New Rockford offers a quiet, relaxed pace of life with strong community ties. Every September, the town draws visitors from all over for the Central North Dakota Steam Threshers Reunion, celebrating the region's agricultural roots with vintage tractors, demonstrations, and camping. Outside of festival season, daily life is comfortable and easy to navigate. Families gather for events at the local K-12 school, spend summer afternoons at the golf course, or meet up at the bowling alley. It is a welcoming prairie town where neighbors know each other and the essentials are always close to home.
