New Rockford, ND

New Rockford was founded in 1883 when the Northern Pacific Railway reached Eddy County, turning a prairie settlement into a county seat and service town. The city grew as rail traffic, farm shipments, and county business met at the same point, and in 1915 residents even mounted a campaign to move North Dakota's capital from Bismarck to New Rockford. That ambition says something about the city's early confidence and central position on the prairie.

Today New Rockford's calendar still has a strong mechanical and agricultural streak. The Central North Dakota Steam Threshers Reunion takes over the Thresher Road grounds each September, with steam equipment, camping, and visitors gathering for the show. The city also lists outdoor concerts, seasonal festivals, sports, a golf course, and a bowling alley among its regular attractions. New Rockford-Sheyenne Public School serves area families, while Eddy County offices and local businesses keep the city functioning through the rest of the year. It is a practical North Dakota town with a civic role larger than its population and an annual event that brings the machinery of the prairie back into view.
