New Sarpy, LA

New Sarpy is a St. Charles Parish census-designated place on the Mississippi River corridor west of New Orleans. Its history reaches back to 1699, when Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville and Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville encountered a Bayagoula settlement near the river's meeting with a tributary. They called the site L'Anse aux Outardes, or Bustard's Cove. Later plantation, refinery, and river-industry history layered a working landscape over that older place. New Sarpy now sits within a parish where residential streets, petrochemical facilities, port traffic, and wetlands share a tight geography.

School life gives the community a familiar center. New Sarpy Elementary was established in 1990 and serves students from New Sarpy and Destrehan through St. Charles Parish Public Schools.
