New Waverly, TX

New Waverly is a Walker County city in the pine country north of Houston, with 914 residents in the 2020 census. The town grew around the railroad after people in Old Waverly declined to give the Houston and Great Northern a right-of-way; the new rail town drew residents away from the older settlement. The old Houston road later shifted through New Waverly too, giving the city a second transportation chapter. A 1909 state bank, a 1910 depot, and the 1869 Saint Joseph's Catholic Church keep several eras visible.

School and forest life shape the present-day map. New Waverly Independent School District sends the Fighting Bulldogs through local grades, and Lone Star College serves district residents after high school. Gulf Coast Trades Center offers vocational education nearby, while the Sam Houston National Forest and its ranger station sit close enough to make pine woods part of the town's regular orbit.
