Newark, AR

Newark sits on higher ground in east-central Independence County, about three miles north of the White River and near the mouth of the Black River. The 2020 census counted 1,180 residents. Its founding was a response to geography: Akron, the older community also called Big Bottom, suffered White River overflows, so John N. Tomlinson laid out Newark on a rise in the 1880s. The railroad reached the town in 1883, putting Front Street beside the tracks and turning Newark into a regional trading point for nearby communities.

Passenger rail ended in 1960 and the Highway 69 bypass opened in 2003, shifting the town's connections away from the old business strip. Newark still keeps that history in view through restored downtown buildings, the late-summer Times and Traditions festival, short train excursions, and local shops. Cedar Ridge School District now serves the community through Newark Elementary and its broader network of schools formed from the Newark and Cord-Charlotte districts. Newark's present shape is a smaller civic center layered over a railroad town built above the river bottoms.
