About Newborn

Newborn is a small Newton County town on Georgia 142, east of Covington, with a name that sounds like a promise and a local story behind it. The settlement was first known as Sandtown, and town histories trace early residents to Rufus Broome, Nancy Pitts, and her brothers. Documents use the name Newborn by 1839; the name is tied to the revival language of preacher Samuel Porter Jones, and the General Assembly incorporated the town in 1894.

Town Hall and the Newborn Schoolhouse sit at the center of the community calendar. The park beside Town Hall has a pavilion, playground, picnic space, and butterfly garden, while newer planting and trail work point toward the Crickett Frog Trail. Spring brings the Hornyhead Fish Festival and tournament at the schoolhouse, with yard-sale booths, classic cars, and anglers making a day of it. Covington supplies larger errands, but Newborn keeps its own small-town rituals. Newborn's local scoop is the way a sermon, a schoolhouse, and a creek-side fishing festival all meet along Georgia 142.
