Newbury, VT

Newbury is an Orange County town whose name covers several village centers, including Newbury, Center Newbury, West Newbury, South Newbury, Boltonville, Peach Four Corners, and Wells River. The town occupies the Great Oxbow of the Connecticut River, with the river marking the Vermont–New Hampshire edge and the Wells River feeding the valley. Long before the English charter of 1763, the upper Connecticut valley was known to Abenaki people as Cowass, a name tied to the pine country around the river and lakes. That older landscape still matters: intervale fields, wooded ridges, and watercourses give Newbury its shape.

Newbury’s later history grew from the same geography. River traffic, timber, grain, and stage routes helped the settlement become a regional market, while the village core accumulated churches, civic buildings, and the Newbury Seminary. The Methodist school founded there in 1839 became part of the story that eventually led to Boston University. Today the town forest on Tucker Mountain adds a large outdoor counterpoint to the historic village streets. The 2020 census counted 2,293 residents across the town, but the place is best understood as a collection of connected communities gathered around one river valley.
