Newcomerstown, OH

Newcomerstown is a village in Tuscarawas County along the Tuscarawas River, about 85 miles east-northeast of Columbus. The 2020 Census counted 3,702 residents. The name reaches back to a Lenape village established in the 1760s by Netawatwees, known to English speakers as Newcomer; its Lenape name, Gekelukpechink, is translated as “still water.” The river valley later supported mills, tanneries, and other small industries, giving the settlement a working history long before the modern village took its present form.

Newcomerstown was laid out in 1827, and rail service helped connect the village to regional trade in the nineteenth century. Today, Main Street and Bridge Street hold the most recognizable civic threads: the Newcomerstown Public Library’s main building at 123 East Main Street came out of a 1999 building plan, and the library maintains a local history archive. The Newcomerstown Historical Society’s statue of Chief Newcomer keeps the Lenape beginning visible on the village map. Water, rail, library, and history all meet in a compact Tuscarawas Valley town.
