About Newell
Newell is a Buena Vista County city that began in 1869 when the railroad and first settlers arrived on the northwestern Iowa prairie. It was established as a station for the Dubuque and Sioux City Railroad and incorporated in 1876. The 2020 census counted 906 residents. The railroad gave the town its first organizing line, while the surrounding county's corn and livestock country still shapes its regional setting.
Newell-Fonda Community School District keeps Newell connected to Fonda and the surrounding farms, with Newell-Fonda High School and the school gym serving as a central gathering place. The city's own history also includes Newell Pride Days, held the first weekend in August, and a main street that has carried businesses such as the Newell Billiards Parlor across generations. Newell is a small railroad-founded city where school athletics, local celebrations, and farm roads now carry the community's shared calendar. The town's story is compact: a rail station became a city, then a school-centered place linked to the neighboring community of Fonda.
