Newell, WV

Newell is a Hancock County census-designated place along the Ohio River, with 1,203 residents in the 2020 census. The community sits across the river from East Liverpool, Ohio, and belongs to the Weirton–Steubenville metropolitan area. West Virginia Route 2 and the Wayne Six Toll Bridge connect Newell to the Ohio road network, while Hancock County Schools serve children through Allen T. Allison Elementary, Oak Glen Middle, and Oak Glen High School. Fiesta’s Newell plant remains the defining industrial address.

Newell grew from farms, ferries, and earlier pottery sites into a planned company town. The North American Manufacturing Company laid out the town in 1902 after buying land from the Newell family, and Homer Laughlin built Plant #4 across the river in 1906. The suspension bridge and trolley carried pottery workers between Newell and East Liverpool; the plant was once the world’s largest pottery factory. Today Fiesta Tableware continues to operate in Newell as a retail tabletop and giftware manufacturer.
