Newfields, NH

Newfields is a Rockingham County town whose primary village sits along the Squamscott River and New Hampshire Route 85. The settlement reaches back to 1638, when it formed along an ancient Squamscott Indian trail, and its river position made it part of the Seacoast's commerce between Exeter, Newmarket, Great Bay, and Portsmouth. Incorporated as South Newmarket in 1849, it adopted the Newfields name in 1895 after a gift from Dr. John Brodhead helped provide a library and town support.

The village center still gathers many of the pieces people use to recognize a place: the 1896 country store, town hall, Paul Memorial Library, post office, community church, and Main Street Art. Newfields Elementary and the fire department sit just off Main Street on Piscassic Road, while a boat launch and conservation trails connect residents to the water and woods. The Piscassic River drains the western side of town, and the Squamscott forms the eastern edge before flowing into Great Bay. Newfields has an old river-village outline with a current routine: school, store, library, trails, and Route 85 connecting it to the wider New Hampshire seacoast.
