Newport CDP (Shelby County), OH

Newport is a census-designated place in Cynthian Township, Shelby County, along the former Miami and Erie Canal and at the meeting of State Routes 47 and 66. It was platted in 1839, and the canal corridor is the key to understanding why the settlement sits where it does. The route tied Newport to the wider movement of farm goods and people through western Ohio before the canal era ended. Today the old canal line and the two state highways still give the community its clearest map orientation.
