Newport, NJ

Newport is a Cumberland County census-designated place within Downe Township, in the low coastal country near Delaware Bay. County Route 553 runs through the community, and the 2020 census counted 487 residents. The landscape is marked by colonial, Craftsman, and Victorian homes, salt-hay marshes, and coastal roads that once carried salt hay for animal bedding and farm use. Nantuxent Creek reaches Delaware Bay near the community, giving Newport a water route as well as a road connection. The marshes also shape drainage, views, and the pattern of older homes.
