Newton Grove, NC

Newton Grove's center has six spokes and a hexagonal loop called Circle Street. That geometry is the quickest way to place the Sampson County town: roads gather at the roundabout before running out toward the county's rural edges and Clinton, eighteen miles south. The town's name came from the oak grove that marked the first settlement. It was incorporated in 1879 as New Town at the Grove and reincorporated as Newton Grove in 1935. Older postal names survive in the record too: the town post office was once Blackman's Store, and Blackman's Mills operated six miles west from 1858 to 1914.

Hobbton High School gives Newton Grove its clearest current institution. The school began in 1956 on a 23-acre campus at 12201 Hobbton Highway, and its athletic places carry the names of coaches tied to state championships: Al Britt Stadium, Kenny Bass Gymnasium, and Jimmy Byrd Field. As of 2026, Sampson County plans a new Hobbton High across the road, with groundbreaking scheduled for 2026 and completion anticipated in 2029. That makes the school corridor an active part of the town's present map, alongside the roundabout and Circle Street. Newton Grove comes into focus through an unusual road pattern and a school campus with its own long memory.
