Smithfield, NC

Smithfield is Johnston County's historic seat, sitting right along the Neuse River about thirty miles southeast of Raleigh. With around twelve thousand residents, it has the steady rhythm of a working courthouse town, where county employees, attorneys, and healthcare workers keep downtown active during the week. The historic core around Market and Third streets features classic brick storefronts and older homes on leafy grid streets, while newer subdivisions branch out toward the town edges. Closer to I-95, a separate commercial strip buzzes with hotels, chain restaurants, and the Carolina Premium Outlets. The paved trail winds for nearly three miles, connecting downtown neighborhoods to four community parks, local schools, and the recreation center without crossing busy roads.
