Newton, UT

Newton was settled in Cache County in 1869 after many Clarkston residents chose to move to a new townsite. A bridge over the Bear River followed in 1871, and the settlement's name was shortened from New Town to Newton. The original layout included a public square and fields, with irrigation water from Clarkston Creek shaping early arguments between the two communities. Newton has two nearby reservoirs, Newton Dam to the north and Cutler Reservoir to the south. Today, Newton Town's map still includes the public square, town library, parks, cemetery, fire department, and facilities available for reservations. The town's story is written in the relationship between water and settlement: the river crossing brought people in, the creek made land usable, and the reservoirs remain part of the surrounding landscape.
