Nicasio, CA

Nicasio is a tiny Marin County CDP in a valley west of Novato, built around Nicasio Creek, ranch land, and a town square that still functions as the community’s point of reference. The name comes from a Coast Miwok person remembered in the area’s Spanish mission records. After the Mexican land grant of 1844, the valley’s story ran through cattle, mills, fishing, and a hotel; the current Rancho Nicasio building dates to 1941 after an earlier hotel and railroad-era center were lost to fire.

The square is the part to see on foot. Rancho Nicasio, St. Mary’s Church from 1890, the general store, post office, and volunteer fire department sit close together, while the Nicasio Historical Society’s “Around the Square” tour ties those buildings into a 14-stop local history walk. Nicasio School serves the nearby community, and the reservoir and creek drainages shape the roads and open land around it. Agriculture remains visible in the mix of cattle, dairy, forage, and small-scale farming. Nicasio’s local scoop is a working ranch valley with a very small population, but a surprisingly clear center.
