About Niland
Niland is an Imperial County CDP southeast of the Salton Sea whose name is only the latest stop in a chain of names. The place began as Old Beach, then became Imperial Junction when the railroad connected it with Imperial Valley routes. Its post office changed from Imperial Junction to Hobgood in 1913 and to Niland in 1914. The new name was chosen to echo 'Nile land,' tying the town to irrigation hopes in the valley; nearby streets such as Luxor and Memphis kept the theme going. The Old Beach label remains the historical clue. Niland's shorthand is railroad, irrigation, Salton Sea, and renamed townsite.
