The Leaning Tower of Niles began as infrastructure disguised as architecture. Built from 1931 through 1934, the half-scale Pisa replica concealed a water tank that supplied pools in Ilgair Park; it stands 94 feet tall, measures 28 feet across, and leans 7.4 feet. The tower entered the National Register of Historic Places in 2019. After work on its concrete, railings, and bells, the surrounding plaza is open for picnics and photographs, though tours to the top remain closed. Restored bells play at 9 a.m., noon, 3 p.m., and 6 p.m. each day, with a clock chime every fifteen minutes, giving the roadside landmark a continuing role in its Touhy Avenue surroundings. Niles operates its own no-fare local bus. The service returned in April 2026 with smaller fourteen-passenger vehicles and runs three routes from 9:30 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. seven days a week except listed holidays.

Stops include Golf Mill, major shopping centers, the public library, Village Hall, the Senior Center, the Family Fitness Center, and locations within a short distance of every residence. Those routes serve a compact 5.85-square-mile village with an estimated 30,443 residents in July 2025. During 2020 through 2024, 28.5 percent were age 65 or older, 42.0 percent were foreign-born, and 59.5 percent spoke a language other than English at home. Asian residents accounted for 20.4 percent and Hispanic or Latino residents for 13.3 percent. High residential continuity accompanied high owner occupancy: 92.3 percent had remained in the same home for at least a year, and owners occupied 74.6 percent of homes. Median owner-occupied value was $358,700, and median gross rent was $1,336. The bus links everyday destinations across this established, multilingual residential population, while the restored tower supplies a public landmark with a daily audible presence.
