Ninety Six, SC

Ninety Six is a quiet town of about 2,000 people located just nine miles northeast of Greenwood. The community gets its unique name from an early trading estimate that it sat ninety-six miles along the frontier trail from the Cherokee settlement of Keowee. It started as a busy backcountry trading post in the 1730s and later became a key battleground during the Revolutionary War, hosting the South's first major land clash in 1775 and a famous 28-day siege at the British Star Fort in 1781.

Today, the town makes great use of its green spaces and deep roots. The Ninety Six National Historic Site sits just down the road, giving locals miles of scenic walking paths around the preserved colonial fort and earthworks. Downtown features a historic square centered around a restored 1915 train depot, local gatherings at Town Park, and the Ninety Six Trail. With dedicated community schools in Greenwood District 52 and Lake Greenwood right next door for fishing and weekend boat outings, Ninety Six offers an easygoing lifestyle with a quick drive to Greenwood's larger shopping and medical hubs.
