Ninnekah, OK

Ninnekah is a small Grady County town just south of Chickasha, with U.S. 81 and the old rail corridor doing most of the orienting. The town’s name comes from a Choctaw word for “night,” and its post office dates to July 28, 1892, when this was still Indian Territory. The Rock Island line reached the area that same year, tying Ninnekah to the rail-built chain that also included Chickasha and Rush Springs.

That railroad story still gives Ninnekah its shape: a town set in the open country south of the county seat, where highway traffic and county roads matter as much as a central main street. Grady County’s older pattern of farming, ranching, and rail movement is the backdrop. The county seat is close, but Ninnekah keeps its own name and small-town orientation.
