Nitro is a city spanning Kanawha and Putnam counties in West Virginia, located along the Kanawha River within the Charleston metropolitan area. Established by the federal government during World War I to manufacture nitrocellulose explosives and incorporated in 1932, the community of approximately 6,853 is served by the Kanawha County and Putnam County school districts.
