Nixon, TX

Nixon is a Gonzales and Wilson county city at the intersection of U.S. Highway 87, State Highway 97, and Farm Road 1117 in south-central Texas. The 2020 census counted 2,341 residents. Gonzales is about 26 miles northeast, while Floresville and San Antonio connect the city to larger services and jobs. Nixon Independent School District, local stores, farm roads, and the industrial edge along the highway give the city a working center inside the wider South Texas ranch and agriculture country.

Nixon began in 1906 when the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway crossed John T. Nixon’s ranch. A townsite company sold lots, and the settlement quickly gained a cotton gin, meat market, barber, doctor, general store, bank, and lumberyard. The post office first used Nixonville, then shortened the name to Nixon in 1908. The city incorporated in 1912 and had cotton gins, stores, a newspaper, telephone service, and electricity by the middle of the decade. Railroad service ended around 1970, but agriculture, oil, and highway traffic still give Nixon its local shape.
