Norphlet, AR

Norphlet got its start in the late 1800s as a humble timber and railroad stop in Union County, but everything changed during the 1920s oil boom. A massive gas well blowout in 1922 lit up the sky and carved out a giant crater that burned for days, quickly putting the small town on the regional map. Those wild boomtown days are in the past, but the town is still proud of its deep South Arkansas roots. Today, the water-filled crater stands as a recognized historic landmark among the surrounding pine woods.

Modern Norphlet is a quiet, friendly community where people appreciate a slower pace of living. Families send their kids to Norphlet Elementary and Middle School, while older students head just down the road to Smackover High within their shared school district. Daily life centers around local churches, community get-togethers, and quiet residential streets. Because El Dorado is only about a fifteen-minute drive south, residents have easy access to bigger-city shopping, dining, and healthcare while enjoying the peace of small-town living.
