North Babylon, NY

Two of North Babylon's principal public landscapes grew from 19th-century country estates. A portion of financier August Belmont's 1,300-acre horse farm became Belmont Lake State Park, while the former Royal Phelps estate became Phelps Lane Park in 1960. That history also reflects the community's civic structure: North Babylon is an unincorporated hamlet and census-designated place within the Town of Babylon, so town facilities, a separate public library, and other special districts matter more to daily services than a village government. The 2020 census counted 17,927 residents. From 2020 through 2024, 87 percent of occupied homes were owner-occupied, the median owner-occupied value was $520,500, monthly costs for owners with a mortgage were $3,000, and median gross rent was $2,144.

Workers' mean travel time was about 35 minutes. Phelps Lane Park remains a resident-focused recreation campus. Its 21 acres include baseball and turf fields, tennis and basketball courts, a playground, picnic space, and a pool complex with children's and interactive pools, two water slides, and Wi-Fi. For the 2026 season, pool access was limited to Town of Babylon residents, making proof of residency part of using the facility. Belmont Lake State Park has a wider public role. The 463-acre day-use park has 7.6 miles of multiuse paths around the lake and along Carlls Creek, plus fishing, playgrounds, picnic areas, athletic fields, a dog run, and seasonal rowboat, pedal-boat, and kayak rentals.

Its annual calendar includes an egg hunt, fishing expo, jack-o'-lantern sail, and holiday tree lighting. The North Babylon Public Library adds another access layer: local cardholders can reserve passes to more than a dozen museums and attractions, and its 2026 calendar included children's reading clubs, career counseling, fitness classes, movies, crafts, and outdoor summer concerts. Facility eligibility therefore changes with the destination - state park, town pool, or library-card program - even though all three are part of local routines.
