North Charleroi, PA

North Charleroi is a Washington County borough on the Monongahela River, across the water from Monessen and within the working river valley south of Pittsburgh. Many residents still call the place Lock 4, a reminder that an earlier Monongahela lock and dam once stood on this side of the river. The Charleroi-Monessen Bridge carries Route 2018 across the water and gives the borough a direct connection to its neighbor. River traffic, steel-country roads, and the bridge have always made North Charleroi feel like part of a larger Mon Valley circuit.

The old Charleroi-Monessen Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988, and its replacement carries the Governor John K. Tener Memorial Bridge name. North Charleroi's recreation league park, river access points, and nearby Charleroi parks keep the waterfront tied to present-day use. The Mon River Water Trail links the borough with other river towns, launches, and parks along the Monongahela. North Charleroi is a compact place, but its local map stretches across the river: Lock 4, the bridge, Monessen, and the long industrial valley all belong to the same everyday landscape.
