North Creek, NY

North Creek is a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Johnsburg, up in Warren County's Adirondack Park. The 2020 census counted 562 residents. The Hudson River and Gore Mountain shape the surrounding setting, while the hamlet's old depot gives it an outsized place in American history. North Creek was the original northern terminus of the Adirondack Railway, and in 1901 it was the station where then-Vice President Theodore Roosevelt learned that President William McKinley had died. Roosevelt's train ride from there became part of the route to the presidency.

The North Creek Depot Museum keeps that story beside the broader history of the Adirondack railroad and North Country. Its exhibits cover the old line, D&H railroad history, snow trains, and the development of skiing at Gore Mountain. Gore's ski center and Ski Bowl now add winter sports, hiking, scenic rides, and summer events around the hamlet. Town hall, the library, and Johnsburg Central School are here too, so North Creek has a simple local arrangement: a historic station, a mountain outside town, and the everyday business of Johnsburg gathered along the same roads.
