About North Fair Oaks
A Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct utility corridor cuts diagonally across North Fair Oaks rather than following its street grid. The community remained unincorporated after a 1923 contest in which Menlo Park sought to absorb Fair Oaks, while Fair Oaks instead incorporated separately as Atherton. North Fair Oaks now borders Redwood City, Atherton, and Menlo Park and had 14,027 residents in 2020. It is one of three San Mateo County communities with a Hispanic or Latino majority. The nickname “Little Michoacán” reflects the number of residents with roots in that Mexican state; the broader area extending into Redwood City is also called Little Mexico.
