North Irwin, PA

North Irwin is a Westmoreland County borough in western Pennsylvania, with 823 residents in the 2020 census. The community grew north of Irwin after the Pennsylvania Railroad reached the area in 1852, opening a path for homes, businesses, and coal-related work. Residents petitioned for borough incorporation in 1894, giving North Irwin its own municipal address beside the larger Irwin and North Huntingdon map.

The old Northside coal mine opened in 1854 just north of the railroad, and mining shaped Westmoreland County’s work and settlement patterns for generations. The borough’s streets still sit in the narrow space between Irwin’s town center and North Huntingdon’s larger suburban spread. Today, North Irwin is a compact borough connected to Irwin, North Huntingdon, and the Pittsburgh region by local roads and the old rail corridor. The Norwin Historical Society keeps the area’s railroad and settlement story in view.
