About North Laurel

North Laurel's community activity has a clear hub on Whiskey Bottom Road. The 63,000-square-foot North Laurel Community Center, opened in 2011, contains a gymnasium and indoor walking track, fitness and dance rooms, classrooms, meeting space, county offices, and a senior center. It is part of a 51-acre county project, with the building and adjoining recreation grounds putting indoor programs, field sports, and casual outdoor use in one place. Its 2020–2024 estimates show how internationally connected the community is: 31.9 percent of residents were born outside the United States, and 37.6 percent of people age five and older spoke a language other than English at home. The surrounding North Laurel Park covers about 40 acres. Its facilities include a 12,000-square-foot skate park, basketball and tennis courts, playgrounds, ball diamonds, picnic areas, and open fields.

A wooded tract west of the community center also contains a tributary that flows toward the Patuxent River, giving the recreation campus a stream corridor as well as built facilities. RTA Route 503 stops at the community center and links it with the Mall in Columbia, Owen Brown, the Vollmerhausen and Birchwood area, and Towne Centre at Laurel. Nearby, the Savage Branch & STEM Education Center opens six days a week and provides public computers and printing, reservable rooms, an audiovisual lab, STEM kits, children's play spaces, and a courtyard with Wi-Fi. Renovated in 2014, the library works as a practical complement to the recreation complex: one is organized around movement and group programs, while the other supplies space and equipment for study, projects, and quieter visits.
