About North Valley Stream
Valley Stream State Park is embedded in North Valley Stream's residential fabric rather than set apart from it. The year-round day-use park has picnic grounds and grills, playgrounds, ballfields, basketball and volleyball, two children's nature trails, and a half-mile exercise loop with 15 stations. Its pavilion can accommodate up to 300 guests, making the park useful for large gatherings as well as ordinary afternoons. In winter, the trails remain available for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing when conditions permit. That range matters in a census-designated place with only 1.86 square miles of land. North Valley Stream had 18,197 residents in the 2020 census, a density of 9,762 occupants per square mile.
Yet its housing pattern is more settled than the density alone suggests. Census estimates for 2020 through 2024 put owner occupancy at 91.4 percent and found that 95.2 percent of people age one or older had stayed in the same home over the preceding year. The average household had 3.36 members. During 2020 through 2024, the foreign-born share was 38.2 percent, and 41.4 percent of people age five or older spoke a language other than English at home. Travel beyond the neighborhood is part of the weekly routine: the mean trip to work was 41.8 minutes in the same estimate period.
NICE bus route N1 runs along the Elmont Road corridor, connecting the area with Elmont, Jamaica, and Valley Stream station. At that station south of the hamlet, riders can transfer to Long Island Rail Road service, and elevators opened as part of accessibility work completed in 2025. North Valley Stream is outside the incorporated Village of Valley Stream, so residents use Town of Hempstead and special-district services while sharing the Valley Stream name and station. In such a dense, settled community, the state park supplies rare expansive common ground while bus and rail links serve lengthy regional journeys.
